Mission

The National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP) is dedicated to providing psychoanalytic training for clinicians and comprehensive treatment for the community. Located in New York City's Columbus Circle, NIP was chartered by the New York State Department of Education in 1972 as a not-for-profit educational facility.

Through a wide range of training programs and in an atmosphere of academic excellence, NIP provides psychoanalytic training to post graduate, licensed mental health professionals as well as graduate level professionals in other fields with an interest in psychoanalytic training.  Our training programs are dedicated to enhancing clinical skills and personal development of our candidates within a supportive professional community.

NIP's Treatment Center offers affordable treatment for individuals and couples and draws from a full range of psychotherapeutic and counseling services.

About Our Training Programs

NIP's Adult Training Program offers a four year postgraduate training for certified disciplines including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and mental health nurses. The core of the program includes didactic and clinical courses in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy along with supervised treatment experience.

Our theoretical orientation includes an intensive comparative study of psychoanalytic theory and technique. Grounded in classical theory, our orientation emphasizes recent advances in relational theory including object relations, self-psychology, developmental theory and interpersonal psychoanalysis. Candidates in the Adult Program are required to undergo psychoanalytic treatment for a minimun of two times a week.

NIP also offers a

  • One Year Evening Program

About Our Clinic: Help For A Variety Of Problems

Counseling, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, EMDR, psychological evaluation, and neuro-psychological testing are services performed by therapists in our graduate and post-graduate training program. These therapists are credentialed in their respective fields and are working under the supervision of experienced psychoanalytic supervisors.

NIP offers treatment to the community in both our Treatment Center located in mid-town Manhattan and in therapist offices throughout Manhattan. All fees are set on a sliding scale basis. NIP patients seek help with a variety of problems including: anxiety, depression, relationship problems, problems stemming from drug abuse in their families, feelings of low self esteem, trauma, developmental delays, addiction problems, problems with authority and general feelings of dissatisfaction in their lives.

At NIP, therapy relies on a collaborative inquiry into specific problems that may be interfering with the person's private or social life.

We Use A Treatment Approach That Is Effective For You

Many kinds of problems can be treated and significant personality changes can occur. Long-standing personality patterns, conflicts and anxiety can often be treated effectively in psychotherapy. However, when appropriate, the treatment of choice for some problems may be psychoanalysis. In psychoanalysis, in contrast to psychotherapy, the patient and therapist may meet up to three times per week allowing for a deeper exploration of the root causes of the problem and the possibility of a more extensive examination of the patient's life.  In cases of trauma, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is also available.

Special Services

Although most patients' issues can be addressed in individual psychotherapy or psychoanalysis, NIP recognizes that certain issues are better addressed by other methods of treatment.  An initial evaluation consultation can be arranged within 48 hours of the patient's phone call. During this first meeting, the patient and the consulting therapist will determine the patient's needs and how to best meet them.
