Supervisory Training Program

This program provides a unique opportunity for certified graduates of postgraduate programs in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy to develop their skills as supervisors. It is designed to further the professional's career by moving the analyst in a systematic way from the role of practitioner to the role of the practitioner/teacher.

In keeping with the comprehensive approach of NIP, the Supervisory Training Program is psychoanalytically oriented and emphasizes contemporary developments in psychoanalytic theory and technique, especially the relational approaches of object relations, self psychology, Relational and interpersonal theories.

The program involves one year of study, which consists of:

  • A weekly 1.5 hour didactic seminar focused on theoretical discussion and actual experience of the supervisory process and includes weekly readings of the literature.
  • Weekly 1.5 hour group supervision during which candidates present their supervisory work
  • Supervision of two candidates in the Psychoanalytic Comprehensive Training Program.
  • Eight individual supervisory sessions of each candidate's work, to be held in the spring term.
  • Participation in the twice-yearly evaluation process of supervisees at the Supervisory Faculty meetings.

The weekly seminar consists of one semester of 15 sessions, while the weekly group supervision lasts throughout the supervisory year. A maximum of twelve are admitted to each class in order to facilitate an atmosphere in which the complex supervisory process can be discussed in depth.

Group supervision and seminars are held on Wednesdays, while spring term individual supervisory sessions are scheduled at the convenience of the senior supervisor and the candidate.

Tuition for the 2012/2013 academic year is $730.00 per semester, plus a $75.00 application fee. Group supervision is $65.00 per session and individual supervision is $90.00 per session.

The program is open to graduates of recognized postgraduate training institutes and includes psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists.
