FAQs

Who is eligible for this service?
People needing a sliding scale fee for treatment of traumatic experiences. Common experiences that we treat include: PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), traumatic childhood experiences such as abuse or neglect, intergenerational trauma, surviving crime or accidents, or other overwhelming experiences.

We also treat people who have been traumatized by early losses and bonding with parents, persistent troubling memories, anxiety and depression, phobias, performance anxiety and generalized low self-esteem.

What if I am already in therapy?
If EMDR is appropriate for you, it can be offered as an adjunct to your ongoing therapy. That means that the EMDR therapist and your ongoing therapist would agree on the plan and stay in contact during your treatment with us.

How does trauma therapy work?
Each treatment plan is tailored for the individual. There are many effective treatments for trauma. At this time we offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as our primary treatment model. Many of our clinicians are additionally trained in other mind-body models of trauma treatment.

What is EMDR and how does it work?
EMDR is an integrative psychotherapy approach that focuses on particular problems or traumas. Research supports that it is effective for treating PTSD. Clinical experience indicates that EMDR is also effective for recent and/or early life trauma, accidents and assaults, trauma-based depression, grief and traumatic loss, attachment problems, phobias, performance anxiety, persistent disturbing memories, and generalized low self-esteem.

EMDR is designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories.  After successful treatment with EMDR, emotional distress is relieved, negative beliefs about yourself are revised, and physiological discomfort is reduced.  Disturbing memories are experienced as having happened in the past, and you no longer feel disturbed by them in the present.

During EMDR, you focus on particular aspects (images, emotions, sensations and beliefs) associated with a disturbing memory. At the same time, you experience "bilateral stimulation" in the form of eye movements, hand-held pulsers or audio tones.  The bilateral stimulation accelerates and deepens the processing in a way that potentiates healing.

What are the length of treatment and the length of sessions?

In the NIP Trauma Treatment Center, each session is 60 minutes. We typically provide 6-12 months of therapy, but the duration of treatment will be determined by you and your therapist, based on the type of problem you present, your general life circumstances and trauma history. The precise length of treatment can be best estimated as the treatment proceeds.

What does treatment cost?
There is a sliding-fee scale based on income. We accept insurance, but we also accept patients without insurance. Unfortunately, we do not accept Medicare or Medicaid.

How do I become a patient/client?

You or your therapist can call us at 212.582.1566, ext 8713.  We will respond to your message, answer your questions and set up an in-person interview with you.  This meeting will clarify whether our services are appropriate for you, and if so, you will be assigned to a Trauma Treatment therapist.
