What makes NIP TI different from other institutes? [ Return to Top ]

Psychoanalysis began almost a century ago with a single practitioner and a single technique. Today there are literally hundreds of "schools" and "techniques" of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Most training institutes subscribe to a single school and thus offer a relatively limited approach to theory and techniques. The Program in Psychoanalysis and Comprehensive Psychotherapy at NIP TI was developed in order to offer a broader, less restrictive training opportunity, more responsive to the contemporary state of the field and to the needs of current candidates and practitioners. The core of the program is a thorough training, both didactic and practical, in the basic principles of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy, drawing heavily on the most recent advances in the fields of theory, self psychology, interpersonal psychoanalysis, and the postmodern relational thinkers. We also offer an introduction to, and opportunities for further study of, additional psychotherapeutic modalitie. Because we recognize that the process of integration is complex and lifelong, we attempt to develop in our candidates a capacity for flexibility in the use of various theoretical and technical paradigms and the critical skills to examine and assess different therapeutic approaches. The training program promotes the development of a solid theoretical foundation in psychodynamic processes while maintaining a spirit of openness and critical eclecticism.

What are the objectives of this training? [ Return to Top ]

The Training Program in Psychoanalysis and Comprehensive Psychotherapy is a carefully designed course of study and supervised clinical practice providing the candidate with the theory, skills, and experience required of the contemporary practitioner. It is offered through a Daytime (four year) Division. Our goal is to enable the candidate to finish the program with a solid grounding in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy, prepared to encounter, evaluate, and assimilate new developments in the broader field of psychotherapy. In order to enrich the program in Psychoanalysis and Comprehensive Psychotherapy, NIP TI has shifted from a two-semester to a trimester schedule. This will allow for more intensive study in core courses and for several additional courses on contemporary psychoanalytic thinking. The curriculum offers intensive comparative study in psychoanalytic theory and techniques, psychoanalytic developmental theory, object relations theory, and self psychology. In the third and fourth years of study, candidates have the opportunity to study additional therapeutic modalities, specifically chosen for their potential to supplement traditional psychoanalytic skills.

What is the course of study? [ Return to Top ]

Candidates are offered a four year program of courses, clinical seminars, and treatment experience. The curriculum is presented in a trimester format (Fall, Winter, Spring). Each trainee is expected to take three courses per trimester, offered sequentially from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (unless other times have been arranged) on the same day throughout the four years of study. For the first year candidates, the courses meet for 1 1/2 hours for 10 weeks, each trimester, for a total of 30 class sessions per year. For second, third and fourth year candidates, the courses meet for 1 1/2 hours for 12 weeks each trimester, for a total of 36 class sessions per year. A candidate may miss no more than two classes per course each trimester, and may be denied course credit if s/he misses more. Under extraordinary circumstances, trainees may defer core courses for one year, but under no circumstances may they be certified without taking all such courses. Each trimester, candidates will schedule a minimum of two class meetings that will be held prior to the beginning of the class day.

What are the course requirements? [ Return to Top ]

Psychoanalytic core courses constitute the curriculum during the first three years of study and the major part of the fourth year. Elective courses are selected by the fourth year class in collaboration with the Curriculum Directors. Electives will be chosen from a selection of offerings or upon request by the class. Whenever possible, they will utilize NIP TI's specialized clinical services as resources. One short paper, three to five pages long, will be required for one class each trimester during the first two years of training. First Year Candidates are required to take three mini-courses at the end of the spring trimester. These courses are 1 ½ hours in length and run for three to four weeks, usually are held in June. These courses will be offered on the same day and times that the first year class meets. The required courses are: Medical Aspects of Psychotherapy, Substance Abuse, and Ethical and Legal Issues in Psychotherapy. The fee for candidates is $20/class session. Although required for first year candidates, these courses will be open to all current trainees and the larger NIP TI community. Other elective courses may be offered from year to year.

What are the supervision requirements? [ Return to Top ]

One individual and one group supervision are required for the first two years. For the 3rd and 4th years candidates may choose either 2 individual supervisions or one individual and one group. These supervisions meet for a minimum of 40 sessions each during the 1st three years, and for 34 sessions each in the 4th year of training. There is an additional requirement of one year of intensive supervision of a three-times-per-week patient, as well as a year of supervision with a Supervisory Training Program candidate.
