Practicum Requirements [
Return to Top ] Each trainee will
be expected to provide up to ten 45 minute treatment
sessions per week in the Treatment Center. Patients
will be referred by NIP TI and candidates will be compensated
at a reasonable rate for each session. Trainees are
required to maintain their own professional liability
insurance. Each student's development, as well as patient
availability, will determine the pace and nature of
case assignments. As a requirement for certification,
each trainee must have treated at least one patient
intensively three or four times weekly, for a period
of at least one year, while in supervision. Candidates
are expected to make hours available on different days
and evenings to accommodate the treatment of patients
in more intensive therapy.
Candidates may be required to meet with patients on
either Friday evening or Saturday as the need for clinic
space dictates. After the first year, candidates may
request to see patients in their own offices. A candidate
whose caseload is under ten hours may not decline case
assignments. In keeping with the traditional clinic
procedure, all referrals that emanate from NIP TI patients
(e.g., friends and spouses) are to be referred (with
specific therapist recommendations, if so desired) to
the Clinic Director for assignment purposes. These potential
patients are not to be referred privately unless approved
by the Clinic Director.
Following certification from the Institute, the candidate
may offer her/his Treatment Center patients the option
of continuing treatment on a private basis. However,
patients assigned in the third and fourth years to therapists
already carrying five patients or more will remain NIP
TI patients as part of the NIP TI Community Treatment
Program for two years after graduation. The NIP TI Community
Treatment Program is a continuing education program
through which alumni may be offered the opportunity
to see NIP TI patients in their own offices.
Supervision Requirements
[
Return to Top ] Trainees in the
first two years of the program for Psychoanalysis and
Comprehensive Psychotherapy are required to have weekly
individual supervision and weekly group supervision.
An individual supervisory session is to be at least
45 minutes and a group supervisory session is to be
at least 90 minutes in length.
In the third and fourth years of training, candidates
may choose to have a second weekly individual supervisory
session instead of weekly group supervision. Thus, third
and fourth year candidates may opt for weekly individual
and group supervision and continue in the pattern of
the first two years of training or have the option of
two individual supervision sessions weekly.
A minimum of 40 individual and 40 group supervisory
sessions is required for each of the first three years
of the program. For those candidates who elect to substitute
individual for group supervision in the third year,
40 individual supervisory sessions are required to replace
the 40 group supervisory sessions. It is recommended
that candidates begin supervision, both individual and
group, as early as possible in September and continue
in supervision until the end of July. In the fourth
year of the program, candidates are required to complete
34 individual and 34 group supervision sessions. For
candidates who choose to have individual supervision
instead of group supervision, thirty four additional
individual supervisory sessions are required to replace
the thirty-four group supervision sessions.
During the treatment of the three times a week patient,
candidates are required to work, on a weekly basis,
for at least 40 sessions, with an additional supervisor.
This supervisor will focus exclusively on work with
this patient.
A minimum of 154 individual sessions, 40 sessions with
a supervisor of the three times a week patient and 154
group supervisory sessions (or their equivalent) totaling
348 sessions, are requirements for graduation.
In addition to the previously cited requirements, first
and second year candidates may be required to obtain
weekly supervision, at no cost to the candidate, from
a supervisor who is enrolled in the NIP TI Supervisory
Training Program, beginning in October of the first
or second year and continuing until the end of May.
In the event that this assignment is not made in the
first or second year, the candidate will be assigned
a supplemental supervisor during his/her third or fourth
year at no charge to the candidate. Supervision with
a supervisor from the Supervisory Training Program is
a requirement for graduation. All supervisors in the
Supervisory Training Program are qualified and experienced
graduates of recognized training institutes.
Assignment and Selection
of Supervisors [
Return to Top ] First year
candidates are assigned both individual and group supervisors.
Beginning with the second year, candidates may choose
their own individual supervisor from the list of approved
supervisors. Group supervisors may be selected by the
candidates but must be confirmed and officially arranged
by the Director of Supervision. The configuration of
the second year group supervision will be determined
by the director of Supervision. Candidates have the
option of working with a different individual supervisor
for each year of the program or may choose to continue
with the same individual supervisor, but for no more
than two years. Thus, a candidate is required to work
with a minimum of five different supervisors during
the course of the four year program.
The Setting for Supervision
[
Return to Top ] Both individual
and group supervision takes place where it is most convenient
for the supervisor. The usual location is the private
office of the supervisor. In those situations when it
is to the mutual convenience of both supervisor and
supervisee to meet at NIP TI, office space will be provided
for the meeting, unless such an arrangement interferes
with the operation of the Treatment Center.
Evaluation of Candidates
[
Return to Top ] Supervisors are
required to submit a written evaluation of their supervisee(s)
at mid year and at the end of the year. They are asked
to discuss the evaluation with each trainee and to have
that trainee sign the evaluation form. The supervisee's
signature does not necessarily indicate validation of
the assessment, but rather is an indication that the
assessment has been brought to his or her attention.
The supervisor is responsible for bringing the signed
evaluation to the attention of the Training Department.
Faculty members are required to write a brief evaluation
of each class member at the end of each trimester. All
individual and group supervisors and faculty members
are required to attend mid-year and year end evaluation
meetings of candidates. At these semi annual meetings,
the progress and development of each candidate is reviewed
and appropriate recommendations are made to the Adult
Training Committee. Candidates are afforded the opportunity
to read all of their evaluations prior to the evaluation
meeting. Further, if they wish, they may write a response
to any evaluation for inclusion in the evaluation meeting.
Evaluation of Supervisors
and Faculty [
Return to Top ] Candidates
are required to submit written mid year and year end
evaluations of their individual and group supervisors.
Trainees are required to discuss their evaluations with
their supervisors. Supervisors are required to sign
the evaluation as an indication that they have been
given an opportunity to consider the assessment. Candidates
are responsible to see that the evaluations are then
brought to the attention of the Director of Supervision.
Instructors are also evaluated by candidates at the
end of each trimester. Faculty evaluations are submitted
directly by the candidate to the Directors of Curriculum,
who then share such evaluations with instructors. These
forms may be anonymously completed by the candidates.
Personal Psychoanalysis
[
Return to Top ] An intensive experience
of psychoanalysis is required for all trainees while
attending the Institute. An absolute minimum of 350
hours of personal treatment (twice per week) is required
throughout the four year training period. However, trainees
are encouraged to undergo more intensive treatment (three
or four sessions per week). Entering trainees are required
to confer with their Advisor or the Director of Training
for guidance in selecting their analyst or in obtaining
approval for ongoing personal treatment before classes
start. Approval of one's personal psychoanalyst, including
changes of therapist during training, must be granted
by the Adult Training Committee. The absolute minimum
requirement for an acceptable analyst is certification
by a recognized four year postgraduate psychoanalytic
training institute and five years of postgraduate experience.
If a candidate wishes to change therapists while in
training at the Institute, the new therapist must similarly
be approved by the Adult Training Committee. It is also
strongly recommended that candidates have a personal
psychotherapy experience in other integrative modalities,
which would be helpful in promoting personal and professional
growth.
As a graduation requirement, twice yearly, in November
and in May, candidates must submit letters from training
therapists to document the continuity of their treatment.
It is the trainee's responsibility to see that such
letters are received by the Institute.
Academic Calendar [
Return to Top ] First year
candidates attend a total of 30 weeks of classes in
the trimester system. The fall trimester begins in September
and continues for 10 weeks. Classes are suspended for
Yom Kippur and Columbus Day and. The winter trimester
beginning in late November or early December, runs for
10 weeks with classes suspended for Thanksgiving, a
holiday recess, which usually includes Christmas, New
Year's Day and Martin Luther King Day, and a winter
recess in February. The spring trimester begins in late
February or early March and continues for 10 weeks.
Classes are suspended for a spring recess, which usually
includes Easter and Passover. In addition to attending
30 weeks of classes, first year candidates are required
to attend a three-to-four week series of three mini-courses
that begin after the end of the spring trimester, in
late may or early June. Length of breaks may vary by
class to accommodate both holiday schedules and training
requirements.
For second, third and fourth year candidates, the fall
trimester begins in September and continues for 12 weeks.
The winter trimester, beginning in late November or
early December, runs for 12 weeks and the spring trimester
begins in late February or early March and continues
for 12 weeks, with a total of 36 weeks of classes per
year. Class breaks are scheduled to accommodate both
holiday schedules and training requirements.

when candidates see a full compliment of patients. The
Institute reserves the right to modify its fee schedule.
Withdrawal prior to the first class meeting will result
in a fifty percent (50%) refund of trimester tuition
(except the $150 non-refundable tuition deposit for
first year students) and must be made in writing. There
will be no refund after classes begin.
Payment of Tuition and
Fees [
Return to Top ] Tuition
is due in four equal installments over the course of
the academic year: payments of 25 percent of the total
tuition are due on September 2, November 2, January
2 and March 2. Supervisory fees are due monthly, corresponding
to the number of supervisory hours completed and are
due no later than the 10th of the following month. Trainees
with special financial needs must consult with the Executive
Director. Late fees will be charged for all late payments
and are accrued monthly. Candidates in arrears for a
period longer than 30 days for either tuition or supervisory
fees will be suspended from attending class and are
subject to suspension from the Institute.
Leave of Absence and Extensions
of Training [
Return to Top ] The ordinary
period of study is four years. Occasionally, unique
circumstances may result in a candidate being permitted
to complete the program over a longer period of time.
When special circumstances arise which necessitate an
interruption of the continuous period of study, a leave
of absence may be granted.
If the circumstances are such that more time is needed
to complete program requirements, an extension of training
may be granted.
The leave of absence or extension of training will extend
for the period of one academic year and may be renewed,
but only for one additional year, at the discretion
of the Adult Training Committee.
A candidate may request a leave of absence or an extension
of training from the training program by submitting
a formal written request to his/her advisor. When indicated,
the advisor, after discussion with the candidate and
with input from the candidate's supervisors and instructors,
makes a recommendation to the Training Committee. If
the candidate requests to continue to see NIP TI patients
during the leave of absence or the extension of training,
and it is approved by the Institute, he/she must continue
with NIP TI supervision. The frequency of supervision
will be determined by the needs of each individual candidate.
All candidates must remain in personal psychoanalysis
at least twice a week. The candidate will be informed,
in writing, of the Training Committee's decision by
his or her advisor. It is the candidate's responsibility
to inform the advisor that all obligations are being
met, and of any changes that may occur. There is also
an administrative fee of $150 per year payable in two
installments.
Probation, Suspension
and Dismissal [
Return to Top ] The candidate's
relationship with the Institute may be altered by the
administration if the candidate fails to meet the Institute's
academic, clinical, professional or administrative standards.
If dismissal is not warranted, a candidate may be placed
on probation for one year, during which time the candidate
may continue to study at NIP TI. The candidate's progress
will be closely monitored during this year and, at its
close, such a candidate may be reinstated to full status,
suspended for an indefinite period of time, or dismissed
from the Institute. At times, candidates may be suspended
from the Institute or from attending classes when they
have failed to meet training standards. Such students
must apply for re-admission. In the event that a candidate
leaves the Institute for any reason prior to certification,
patients must be transferred to other therapists in
the program. This procedure is to be implemented by
the candidate's advisor, supervisors, and the Director
of Treatment Services. The Admissions Committee will
determine, with the Training Committee, the appropriateness
of re admission of any candidate who has interrupted
study.
Class Advisors [
Return to Top ] Upon admission
to the Institute, a candidate is assigned an advisor
(a senior member of the Institute) for the duration
of her/his period of study. Advisory sessions, when
needed, provide a forum for discussion of the program,
the candidate's development, and the candidate's experience
at the Institute. Issues of particular concern or requiring
special consideration are to be brought to the attention
of the student's advisor, who can then assist the candidate,
if indicated. The advisors chair the twice yearly evaluation
meetings of candidates and sometimes may be asked to
meet with the class at class meetings. A student desiring
to change a personal therapist should discuss this with
his/her advisor. The advisory relationship is regarded
as an important one, and serves a mentoring function.
Final Project [
Return to Top ] The Final
Project is a paper (approximately 25 pages). Its purpose
is to demonstrate the candidate's ability to integrate
theoretical and clinical material and to provide an
opportunity for the candidate to further explore and
integrate these two aspects of psychoanalytic training.
The paper may focus on theory, research, or a clinical
case, but in each instance it will include both clinical
and theoretical material. A set of guidelines for the
project may be obtained from the NIP TI office or the
Project Coordinator. Brief written assignments, as a
form of class work, help prepare the candidate for the
project. Additionally, a free workshop "De-Mystifying
the Paper" is typically offered by NIP TI alumni.
Candidate Involvement
[
Return to Top ] The Institute encourages
the active participation and involvement of trainees
in a variety of ways. The Board of Directors is the
policy making organ of NIP TI and with the Executive
Director, oversees the ongoing functioning of the Institute.
The NIP TI Adult Council is an advisory body, which
consists of a representative of each class and a Board
Liaison. The Council meets periodically throughout the
academic year. The purpose of the Council is to bring
the opinions and concerns of each class to the attention
of the administration and for the administration to
bring information and its concerns to the attention
of the candidate body. Once a month, in allotted class
times, each class holds a formal administrative meeting
which provides committee representatives with the opportunity
to share committee issues and to obtain class feedback.
In this way, candidate opinion becomes an integral part
of the administrative mechanism of NIP TI. Monthly class
meetings begin in October and alternate through class
times from month to month. Open Town Meetings are also
held no less frequently than once per year, in order
to share and discuss developments within the NIP TI
community.
Focus Series [
Return to Top ] NIP TI sponsors
a series of talks throughout the academic year. The
talks are free of charge for the NIP TI community. These
colloquia, called the Focus Series, are usually held
on Thursday evenings from 8:30 - 10:00 p.m. or Sunday
mornings. Candidates are required to attend two colloquia
per year. The colloquium series affords candidates an
opportunity to hear about interesting theoretical ideas
and recent developments in clinical practice, as well
as providing an occasion to share ideas with trainees
from other classes and the larger NIP TI community.
Certification [
Return to Top ] When all
course work, practicum experience, required supervision,
Final Project, other administrative requirements, and
personal psychotherapy are completed, a candidate will
be recommended by the Adult Training Committee for certification.
The final decision regarding each candidate's suitability
for certification rests with the Board of Directors.
A Certificate in Psychoanalysis and Comprehensive Psychotherapy
authorized by the Regents of the University of the State
of New York will be awarded when all requirements have
been satisfied.
Transcripts [
Return to Top ] An official
transcript of courses and supervision completed at NIP
TI will be provided upon request. The fee for each transcript,
which bears an official signature and NIP TI seal, is
$10. All such requests must be submitted in writing
to NIP TI, 250 West 57th Street, Suite 501, New York,
NY 10019.
