What is the orientation of the program? [ Return to Top ]

We have a comparative orientation. We offer the candidate courses in child psychoanalytic theory and technique from the perspectives of ego psychology, British object relations, self psychology and contemporary relational psychoanalysis.

How many classes a year must I take? [ Return to Top ]

Full-time candidates take eight courses a year (four courses each semester) over a three-year period. Part-time candidates may enroll in as few as two courses during a semester; however, to be certified the entire program must be completed in six years.

When are the classes? [ Return to Top ]

Classes are Friday mornings between 8:00 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. at NIP.

What are the classes? [ Return to Top ]

There are four distinct but interrelated series of courses given over the three years of study. They are:

1. Theories of child and adolescent psychotherapy and psychoanalysis

2. Psychoanalytic theories of development from infancy to late adolescence

3. Clinical technique in child and adolescent treatment

4. "Friday Series"- presentations of contemporary issues, clinical cases, and group presentations

What are the other components of the program? [ Return to Top ]

The program requires that the candidate average ten hours a week of supervised experience with children, adolescents and their families. In order to begin the supervised experience component, the candidate must be in twice weekly (or more) personal treatment, and in supervision with an NIP supervisor. The program also requires one year of group supervision to start after the first year of training.

I don't have a private practice, where can I get patients? [ Return to Top ]

The training program has access to child and adolescent patients and their families as part of the NIP clinic. The candidate's program advisor will work closely with the candidate and the clinic director to ensure that the candidate has a variety of treatment experiences.

May I continue treatment with my therapist? [ Return to Top ]

The program prefers that the candidate be in treatment with a certified psychoanalyst, who is accredited by a four-year psychoanalytic training program and has five years of subsequent experience. However, exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis. A minimum of 280 hours of personal treatment is required during the training program.

What is the cost of the program? [ Return to Top ]

For part-time candidates, the tuition is $300 per class (for the first year) and $320 per class (for the second and third years). For full-time candidates, the cost is $1,050 (for the first year) and $1,120 (for the second and third years) per semester.

How much does supervision cost? [ Return to Top ]

Each supervisory hour costs the candidate $50/session.
