The Child and Adolescent Training Program
Integrating Psychoanalysis with Developmental Theory

The National Institute of the Psychotherapies offers a three year postgraduate psychoanalytic and comprehensive psychotherapy training program in child and adolescent treatment designed to meet the needs of today's professionals. The core of the program encompasses a thorough training, both didactic and practical, in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy. Unlike most programs that subscribe to a single "school" of psychoanalysis, the emphasis of the training program is on integrating the theory and techniques of contemporary schools of psychoanalysis with developmental theory. The focus of the program will be on object relations, self psychology and relational psychoanalysis, and recent developments in psychology, including infant research and attachment theory. Full time candidates in the child/adolescent program take four 75-minute courses during two 16-week semesters along with fulfilling the clinical requirement. Courses are offered sequentially from 8 a.m. through 1:45 p.m., and are held on Fridays. A special feature of the program is part-time candidacy. Part time candidates design their programs in consultations with advisors, and have up to six years to finish training.
