Doctoral Psychology Externships
Externship in Doctoral Clinical Psychology

Externs treat adults in an outpatient mental health facility. They are provided with at least one weekly individual supervisory session with an experienced psychoanalyst. They may have two individual supervisors if they have more than three psychotherapy patients per week. In addition to individual supervision, externs attend a weekly group supervision with Dr. Axelrod. Externs also attend case conferences at NIP TI where a senior analyst consults on patients presented by either externs or social work interns. They also attend seminars (about 20 per academic year) on a wide range of topics given by graduates of NIP TI or the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.

Most of the supervisors hold Relational and British Object-Relations perspectives, although none are ideologically rigid. Externs are welcome to take part in all extra-curricular activities such as continuing education courses, the Focus Series and the annual conference at reduced fees. The externship provides the externs the opportunity for a rich experience working deeply with patients under excellent supervision. Some externs have elected to stay on for an additional year to continue their work with their patients.
