The Educators' Award
Each year at graduation, the Educators'
Award is granted to the author of the most outstanding
scholarly paper written by an N.I.P. community member
and entered in this competition. Purpose
The major purpose of this competition is
to provide an incentive to members of the community
to express their original ideas in scholarly papers
to appear in the psychoanalytic literature. Judges are
asked to develop a list of specific recommendations
for the author of each paper--recommendations intended
to improve the quality of each of the papers submitted--so
that whether or not a paper wins the competition, it
can be strengthened for future publication.
Who May Enter
The competition is usually open only to
new authors whose psychoanalytic work has never been
published by a refereed journal or a book. Faculty members,
supervisors, administrators, and alumni of all the Institute's
training programs may enter the competition. Contestants
who have had publications outside of psychoanalysis
are qualified to enter. Scope
of Papers Entries may be of broad
scope, emphasizing either clinical or theoretical material,
although papers encompassing both will have an advantage
in the competition. Those papers concerned with teaching
and supervising the psychoanalytic process also may
be entered in the competition. Entries that reveal an
emphasis on integration-of different analytic techniques,
of different psychotherapeutic paradigms, of analytic
techniques with nonanalytic ones, or that attempt to
compare and integrate different theoretical perspectives--also
will have a competitive advantage, as a reflection of
the spirit of openness at NIP TI. Qualifying
Papers Papers previously given
as oral presentations at professional conferences are
acceptable. Those already submitted, but not yet accepted
for publication by a psychoanalytic journal, also may
be entered into the competition. Papers based on candidates'
final projects also qualify for submission, with modifications
if desired, but only after the author has completed
her or his training and received certification from
the Institute. The author of the winning paper is given
an opportunity to publish the paper in NIP TI's journal,
Psychoanalytic Perspectives: A Journal of Integration
and Innovation. Deadline
To be considered for the award, three copies
of the paper, including two without the author's name,
must be submitted to Kenneth A. Frank, Ph.D., Chair,
no later than April 1, 2006. Format
The text may not exceed thirty double-spaced,
typewritten pages, including the title page and references,
and must comply with the standards set forth in the
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association
(Fifth Edition). Contestants may wish to refer to Contemporary
Psychoanalysis, Psychoanalytic Dialogues, Psychoanalytic
Inquiry, Psychoanalytic Perspectives, the Psychoanalytic
Quarterly, or other leading journals, for examples of
the topics and style that are regarded as appropriate.
Judging Procedures
Readers are drawn from NIP TI's Education
Committee, which is comprised mainly of Institute program
directors. Each paper is read blind by two independent
readers. When appropriate, outside readers with special
expertise are recruited to evaluate specialized papers.
The criteria for evaluating papers include originality,
timeliness, style, and relevant literature review, among
other standards. The ultimate criterion is that a paper
be judged publishable as a valuable contribution to
the field of psychoanalysis. The paper judged best,
with strong attention paid to standardized rating procedures,
will be selected as the final prize winner.
