The program includes one year of study that is divided into two semesters of 15 sessions each. The two courses are given on Tuesday evenings.

Introduction To Psychoanalytic Thought

Tracing the development of specific psychoanalytic theories including classical, object relations and self psychology, this course will provide an overview of psychoanalytic thought that focuses on its historical and theoretical evolution. Psychoanalytically informed interventions and major concepts in the practice of psychotherapy will be introduced, including transference / countertransference, therapeutic alliance, phases of treatment and resistance.

Clinical And Practice Applications In The Work Setting

Looking at the difficult client in the work setting, this course will help the professional gain a psychodynamic understanding of the clients behavior. The professional will learn about the consequences of deviation from normal development within the life cycle and its relationship to presenting symptoms. School phobias, eating disorders, consequences of childhood incest and substance abuse are among the problems highlighted. Topics will vary depending on their relevance to problems encountered by the class participants in their work settings. Case presentations will be utilized.
